This week I have spent quite a bit of time in meetings with regard to phase two of the elementary renovation. Wednesday was our pre-bid meeting and I was very pleased with the number of contractors our job attracted. Those bids are due December 15th with possible board approval on December 18th.
I also had three separate meetings to discuss the strategic plan for the elementary attendance center going forward. I will be very interested to have a discussion with you at our work session about how best to proceed. Consider this: at our current rate it will take approximately five years to complete the renovation in the elementary attendance center. That is before we consider any modifications to the building we may want to explore in light of anticipated enrollment growth, and assuming nothing else comes up that needs to be addressed (think temperature control units). Following that period, we will need to move our renovation work to the high school, which is over twenty years old at this point!
On Wednesday I met with our regional superintendents at Hawkeye Community College to discuss the status of concurrent enrollment courses and other pertinent data as it relates to post-secondary success. We always appreciate this annual meeting at Hawkeye!
Perhaps the most exciting news of the week is the city council voted 5-0 to approve the amended plat proposal for the Twin Oaks residential development at the intersection of Ranchero and Butterfield Road. You may recall the proposal had previously been met with opposition, but through teamwork and collaboration with those neighbors, they have now endorsed the plan. This residential development is set to bring 73 single family homes to our district! Exciting times for certain!
The photo I am sharing this week is from a fire drill that we had on Monday. State law requires school districts to hold two fire drills per semester and we still needed to get one more in this term. The seasonable weather this week made it the perfect opportunity to get our last drill in before the snow flies!
Well, that is about all for now. Basketball and wrestling season are now in full swing. Tonight we will host AP, so if you are looking for some exciting entertainment, stop by!
A reminder that we have a work session scheduled for December 11th beginning at 3:00 and concluding promptly at 6:00. The agenda for that afternoon will include a discussion and report from administrators on student achievement and a discussion about facilities.
Have a great weekend!
Dr. Anthony D. Voss, Superintendent
