I hope all is well with you today! You are probably wondering why I am early with this post, but tomorrow is moving day! I am planning to take a vacation day tomorrow and hopefully get moved in over the weekend. It looks like it is going to be just in the nick of time too, with another winter storm bearing down on us for Sunday night into Monday. Speaking of which, Tuesday ended up being quite a mess! Of all the ways to cancel school, my least favorite is to have a late start and an early dismissal on the same day! It happened on Tuesday! You can read all about it in my blog this week. Fortunately everyone seemed to be pretty understanding.
It was a pretty interesting week! The big news of today was the release of the Iowa School Report Card which I briefed you about at our last board meeting. I had a chance to preview this great news for Hudson Schools with our SIAC on Monday night and then with the faculty during building meetings this week. I am planning a feature blog next week that will also appear on the website for next week. We want to share this awesome news with our community stakeholders!
Of course the legislature convened on Monday, which is the other big news of the week. The governor released his budget targets of 2% SSA for each of the next two fiscal years. Certainly not the adequate funding levels that are needed to sustain Iowa schools, but unfortunately this has become the norm. Probably the biggest jolt to the system was the governor directing the Iowa Department of Education to put the development of the Smarter Balance Assessment on hold because the legislature has some concerns about the test. This is a huge setback for Iowa schools and is sure to cause difficulties with Iowa’s plan to be in compliance with the new education law Every Student Succeeds.
That is all for now! Have a great weekend and I look forward to seeing you on Monday!
